Derwent Stepping Stones is fully committed to ensuring there is a high quality, motivated and qualified team that delivers the best possible service to the children in our care.
Our rigorous recruitment process ensures we bring the right people into the team and alongside ongoing training and development plus the opportunity for advancement we have excellent retention levels.
We are committed to ongoing quality assurance and each term staff receive individual feedback about their performance including what they are doing well and areas which could be improved further.
Our staff qualification levels exceed those set out by Ofsted with over 70% of our childcare workforce qualified to level 3 or above. All staff have first aid certificates, basic food hygiene and safeguarding training as standard. Our internal training directory ensures all staff remain up to date with current thinking about a range of early years subjects.
Staff develop skills in certain areas through training and experience and these skills are used in all settings to support children with additional needs, for example speech and language, behaviour and special needs.
In order to ensure a passionate and dedicated future workforce Derwent Stepping Stones works closely with local training providers to deliver traineeships and apprenticeships. We believe that training our own future workforce ensures we continue to give children within our setting the best possible start in life.

I have now worked at Derwent Stepping Stones for 15 years and in that time have always been in awe by its humble beginnings to the fantastic state of the art premises we have today.
My motivation to always perform to the best of my abilities is inspired by the ethos of Derwent stepping Stones and the support to further my progress that has been provided.
All in all, a fantastic 15 years so far.
I have worked at Derwent Stepping Stones for nearly four years. I began my journey as a volunteer and am now fully qualified. My passion is childcare, it is not just a job but a career path I want to continue to grow in. Over the past few years I have learnt lots of skills, gained tons of confidence and made special bonds with the children, parents and staff.
I have worked at Derwent Stepping Stones for almost 14 years across all age groups starting off as a student, my favourite age to work with is 2-3 year olds. Each day is very rewarding seeing the children learn and achieve, enjoying lots of fun new experiences through play. It is especially rewarding to hear the children learn and use our names and hear parent’s feedback that their child has talked about us within their home environment and asked if they are going to nursery today. Its heart warming to know that the children feel happy, safe, secure and enjoy their time at nursery with us, and that’s why I love my job.
